The name of the game is: after filming comes the montage, after the montage comes projection. Breaking any of the rules, any shift, any deletion, confusion, robs the production company of success in the conventional sense. Film as a perfect theater of illusions in air-conditioned and dimmed experiential-boxes. Production schemes deserted through sabotage of the temporal structure means: “world” is no longer being feigned and instead the constructability of “world” is demonstrated. In Up+Down+On+Off montage and projection take place simultaneously. The montage takes place on the screen, not on celluloid. The simultaneity of projection and montage shows: film is drawing. The film is intended for educational purposes. It is an exercise in painting, a rejection of painting, an echo of the cubist desertion of painting. Space is understood as a moment of time. Only a part of the projected image is visible, the rest, covered over with geometric patterns on the celluloid, is added, and by circling the camera around the depicted object and by fixing all sides of a body to one and the same place, that is, the screen, static pictures are superimposed. The emancipated viewer, who has to take part in the production of the film in order to enable its realization, completes with the pencil what is covered over on the celluloid. In the end, what remains in the white square of the projection are the lines and traces of the reproduced reproduction. (VALIE EXPORT)
