Bilder der Welt und Inschrift des Krieges, 1988

Film, 16mm, black and white and color, sound, transferred to video, 75 min Director: Harun Farocki Photography: Ingo Kratisch, Irina Hoppe Produced by: Harun Farocki Filmproduktion
The U.S. bomber crew that took off from Foggia in April 1944 for targets in Silesia (the BUNA factories, IG-Farben), had no idea what they had photographed. They made the first images of the Auschwitz concentration camp, which was located close to the petrol and rubber factories they were bombing. The picture of Auschwitz is included in every other image in this film. It is the center of gravity for the loops of the film’s parts; the vanishing point of the film is a blind spot. (Harun Farocki)
