Julius Koller

Biographie

Julius Koller was born in Pistyan, Slovakia in 1939 and died in Bratislava in 2007. From 1958 to 1965 Koller studied at the Academy of Applied Art and Design in Bratislava. The artist was among the most important representatives of the oppositional, regime-critical Slovakian art scene of the 1960s. Influenced by the ideas of Situationism, he carried out transient actions, so-called Anti-Happenings, in public or private spaces. The artist had numerous solo exhibitions, among others, at the Kölnischer Kunstverein (2003), Kunstraum München (2004), and Slovak National Gallery, Bratislava (2010). He participated in the 23rd Sao Paulo Biennial (1996) and the 50th Venice Biennial (2003). In 2009 the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava initiated an extensive symposium on the artist’s entire oeuvre.
