Biographie

Renate Kowanz-Kocer was born in Vienna in 1954, where she studied graphic design from 1974 to 1978 with Oswald Oberhuber at the University of Applied Arts. In her work, which includes installation, performance, film, and video, she is occupied with the generation of sound and image spaces through the employment of body movements and gestures. Image and sound, visual and auditory sense impressions always remain in close relationship to one another. Kowanz-Kocer participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Video Made in Austria, Museum of Modern Art Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna (1980), Video Österreich, Kunsthaus Zürich (1982), TRAJEKTIL – Elektrische Architektur 2, Künstlerhaus Palais Thurn und Taxis, Bregenz (1992), RE-PLAY. Beginnings of International Media Art in Austria, Generali Foundation (2000), Let’s Twist Again, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna (2002), and Every Day, Salzburger Kunstverein (2006). Renate Kowanz-Kocer has performed at festivals such as the Wiener Festwochen (1983), Ars Electronica in Linz, and the steirischer herbst (1987). The artist lives and works in Vienna.
