Reality Properties ? Fake Estates (Block 3398, Lot 116), 1973

Photo montage 1 property deed, double sided, 35 x 21.5 cm, 1 site map, black-and-white photograph, 20.5 x 25.3 cm, 1 black-and-white photograph of the site, 20 x 24.5 cm Framed 70 x 55 cm 68 black-and-white photographs of the property, vintage prints, approx. 7.9 x 11.7 cm each, (assembled by Jane Crawford), Framed 25 x 690 cm
Matta-Clark purchased them because he was fascinated by the idea of owning something that could never be experienced; it was a game with the idea of ownership, fake, rather than real, estate. He had wanted to use them for either permanent, more expensive works, as an alternative to the impermanence of most all of his other projects, or to create related works of art. “The latter would consist of 1. written documentation of the piece of land, including its exact dimensions, location, and perhaps a list of weeds growing on it. 2. a full-scale photograph of the property, and 3. the property itself. The first two items would be shown in a gallery and, if the artwork was purchased, the owner would get the certificate to the land, too.” (Sabine Breitwieser)
