Gordon Matta-Clark

Within the Project Series at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Matta-Clark, inspired by the figure of Rockefeller as the patron of the MoMA, proposed a project with references to other great patrons of the arts, the Medici of Renaissance Florence. The balls making up the coat of arms of this famous Italian family can be interpreted as a succession of spherical cuts in different planes, all based on four to seven circular shapes. The project included cut spheres which freed parts of the glass and steel of the façade, and other cuts with semi-circular or oval cross-sections. In one design the spherical cuts appear like flowers, in another there is a dollar sign which was supposed to be cut into the building. None of the proposals have been realized. (Sabine Breitwieser)
