John Murphy

Biographie

John Murphy was born in St. Albans, Great Britain in 1945. He is among the representatives of British Conceptual Art who dealt intensively with interfaces between poetry, photography, and film. Modern lyricists, for example, Stephane Mallarmé and Blaise Cendrars, but also artists such as Marcel Broodthaers and Samuel Beckett are important reference figures for the artist. Cinema’s beginnings and its effects on the other arts, as well as the contemplation of reception, representation, and their relationships to language since the modern era have special significance in his work. Murphy has had numerous solo exhibitions, among others, at the Serpentine Gallery, London (1971, 1983), Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1985), Villa Arson, Nizza (1997), and Het Kabinet, Gent (2005). He lives and works in London.
