Since the end of the 1980s, the Generali Foundation has built up a highly respected collection of contemporary art consisting of some 1,400 works by around 160 international artists. It includes several key works of art history since the 1960s. In contrast to many state-owned and private collections however, the Generali Foundation does not endeavor to present a comprehensive overview, and instead focuses on individual artistic approaches in connection with specific themes. The works in the collection date back to the sixties. Older works are set in contrast with more recent ones and thus placed within a contemporary context. The themes addressed in the Generali Foundation collection include conceptual and performative aspects of art, the borderline area of architecture and design, and artistic strategies that analyze and critically interrogate social parameters and the role of the media.

With numerous texts by the artists:
Gottfried Bechtold, Norbert Brunner/Michael Schuster, Ernst Caramelle, Maria Eichhorn, Valie EXPORT, Harun Farocki, Andrea Fraser, Rainer Ganahl, Isa Genzken, Bruno Gironcoli, Dan Graham, Hans Haacke, Hans Hollein, Sanja Ivekovic, Mary Kelly, Richard Kriesche, Elke Krystufek, Fried Kubelka, Bertrand Lavier, Dorit Margreiter, Gordon Matta-Clark, Walter Pichler, Adrian Piper, Mathias Poledna, Florian Pumhösl, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Martha Rosler, Gerhard Rühm, Allan Sekula, Martin Walde, Peter Weibel, Franz West, Heimo Zobernig, and many others.
