Following the successful show in the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the second venue of the international Generali Foundation Collection tour will open in Rotterdam in July 2005. Three institutions -the Nederlands fotomuseum, TENT. and Witte de With - have joined forces to present this major collection during this summer.
The exhibition in Rotterdam—as in Munich—is structured dialogically and thematically. Each institution is focusing on one special aspect of the collection. The Nederlands fotomuseum, TENT. and Witte de With are all in direct proximity to one another.
In the Nederlands fotomuseum, which is located in a former print shop, works will be presented under the aspect Image, Text &Research. TENT. will focus on the themes Body, Media & Narratives; here, among other things, the Generali Foundation‘s large video collection will be opened to the public. In Witte de With, which is situated on the upper floors of the same building, works dedicated to the themes Architecture, Space & Intervention (2nd floor), and Sculpture, Body, Space & Performance (3rd floor) will be shown.
Since the late 1980s, the Generali Foundation has built up a highly respected collection of contemporary art. At the present time, it contains 1.700 works by 160 different artists. One of its unique features is the focus on concept art and performance art, as well as socio-critical works of the 1960s/1970s. Its core consists of central works by Austrian artists, which are juxtaposed with international works and linked with those of a younger generation. With this exhibition tour, the collection has been presented for the first time in such a comprehensive form outside of Austria.
Organized by the Generali Foundation in collaboration with the Nederlands fotomuseum, TENT. and Witte de With. Curated by Sabine Breitwieser (Director, Generali Foundation) in collaboration with Frits Gierstberg (Chief Curator, Nederlands fotomuseum) and Rein Wolfs (Curator, TENT. and Witte de With).
