Generali Foundation Collection
in Zagreb

28 October through 9 December 2005

Place of exhibition: Galerija Klovićevi dvori, Zagreb/HR

With Occupying Space. Generali Foundation Collection, the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb continues its exhibition series featuring prestigious international collections. The presentation of major collections is one of the main activities of this museum until the new museum building, currently under construction, is opened in 2007. The previous exhibition in this series featured the renowned collection of the Paris Musée National d’Art Moderne from the Centre Pompidou.

Since the late 1980s, the Generali Foundation has built up a highly respected collection of contemporary art. At the present time, it contains 1,700 works by 170 artists. One of its unique features is the focus on concept art, as well as socio-critical works of the 1960s/1970s. Key works by Austrian artists form the core of the collection, which are juxtaposed with international works and linked with those of a younger generation. Over the past few years, the Generali Foundation has acquired an increasing number of major works by artists from Central Europe.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb was founded in 1954 as Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art. From the beginning, it took over the responsibilities of a museum with a growing collection. For the series of exhibitions presenting various collections, the museum cooperates with the nearby Klovicevi dvori Gallery.

The exhibition in Zagreb was organized by the Generali Foundation Vienna in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb. Curated by Sabine Breitwieser (Director, Generali Foundation) in cooperation with Tihomir Milovac (Senior Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb).
