A Non-Event
Michael Newman, Art Historian
Lecture in English

Michael Newman will talk about the relation of the trace and decision to the event. Where decision is concerned, he will argue that it is essential to the event that it be "undecidable" --that an event could always also be a non-event. Also, where the traces of the event are concerned, the relation to an event always has a retroactive (nachträglich) structure. It is only afterwards that the event can be related to the situation in which it has taken place. To illustrate this thesis he will look at some artworks, in particular by Joëlle Tuerlinckx.

Michael Newman teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is Professor of Art Writing at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has written extensively on contemporary art, including the books "Richard Prince: Untitled (couple)" (2006) and "Jeff Wall" (2007), as well as essays on Alfred Jensen, Hanne Darboven and Joëlle Tuerlinckx. Co-editor of "Re-Writing Conceptual Art" (1999). Curated exhibitions, including "Tacita Dean" for the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto (2000).
