Displacements

Lecture (English)
Mieke Bal, Cultural theorist, artist, Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA), University of Amsterdam

Ana Torfs displaces times and places in order to make us aware of the complex relationships between images and reality. An exhibition in turn displaces her works in relation to time and place as well. Yet the willful displacements, including the temporal ones we call anachronism, help us understand and grasp the past as well as spatial otherness on better terms than the more usual historical and geographical order. In the lecture, I will discuss a few instances of this spatio-temporal displacing as a method of understanding.
