Zyklus von Kleinigkeiten (Cycle of Trifles), 1998, is based on Ludwig van Beethoven's conversation books. During the last years of his life, the composer, who had lost his hearing, used these notebooks to communicate with those around him. For the film, Ana Torfs combined "silent" film sequences showing settings of his everyday life with offscreen voices and statements by the composer displayed in intertitles. Image, text, and sound are interwoven to form a narrative that evokes moods and emotions while remaining open to a variety of interpretations.
