Art That Has No Boundaries

Artists’ Magazines

Opening: November 30, 2019, 7 p.m.
Exhibition on view: December 1, 2018–March 24, 2019
Place of exhibition: Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Mönchsberg

The 1950s and 1960s, the artist Bernadette Mayer recalled, were a time
when “we learned a lot—like how to make art that had no boundaries.”
From 1967 until 1969 Mayer and Vito Acconci edited the magazine 0 to 9
which exploded the medium’s formal and textual limitations.

To this day, artists launch magazines to establish platforms for their own
work, build independent alternatives to the commercial art press, and set
up experimental spaces for collaboration, debate, and artistic production.
The exhibition showcases these vast possibilities of the medium with a
selection of six periodicals from the library collections of the Generali
Foundation and the Museum der Moderne Salzburg.

Magazines: Control (since 1965), Aspen (1965–1971), 0 to 9 (1967–1969),
Schastrommel (1969–1974) und Drossel (1975–1977), LTTR (2002–2006),
ztscrpt (since 2002)

Curator: Antonia Lotz, Curator Generali Foundation Collection
