Systems & Subjects

The director of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg Sabine Breitwieser and the newly appointed curator of modern art Beatrice von Bormann have embarked on a research of artworks related to Systems & Subjects that ranges from the early twentieth century to the present and selected works to frame a thematically focused dialogue between the various holdings—the Generali Foundation, the collection of prints, MAP, and recent new acquisitions made possible by generous donations. 

The exhibition of works from the collection will feature works by artists such as Max Beckmann, George Grosz, and Max Klinger in interaction with pieces by Bruno Gironcoli, Harun Farocki, Hans Haacke, Mary Kelly, Július Koller, Anna Oppermann, Allan Sekula, Franz West, Heimo Zobernig, and others. A selection from the holdings of prints that illuminates the museum’s origin is set in relation to works from the Generali Foundation Collection and recent donations to the museum of works by artists Lynn Hershman Leeson and Andreas Siekmann. The exhibition highlights links on the levels of motifs and themes between works of classical modernism in which the human being takes center stage and conceptual approaches in art from the 1960s to the present.
