Antonio Muntadas

Biographie

Antoni Muntadas was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1942. He studied industrial engineering in Barcelona and through his interest in painting, arrived at multimedia art, continuing to become one of its most important representatives. From 1977 to 1984 he was a research fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT in Boston. He is currently teaching there as a visiting professor. Muntadas works trans-medially with video, photography, and installation and also uses internet and radio to engage with political and social themes. He realized one of the first internet artworks in 1994, The File Room—an open databank on the internet, which archives censure cases. Muntadas has had numerous solo exhibitions, among others, at Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid (1988, 2012), Witte de With, Rotterdam (1989), MACBA Barcelona (2002), Württembergischen Kunstverein Stuttgart (2006), and Jeu de Paume in Paris (2012). In addition, he has participated in the Venice Biennial (1976, 2005), Documenta 6 (1977), documenta X (1997), 18th Sao Paulo Biennial (1981), and 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011). He has lived and worked in New York since 1971.
