In a five-floor commercial building opposite the “Steen,” a crowded tourist area in Antwerp, Matta-Clark made a series of circular, overlapping cuts, creating what he called “a stroll through panoramic arabesques.” Originally he planned a project to be called Sphere, which would have been visible from the outside. However, city authorities only allowed an interior project. When the artist died, the artistic world made great efforts to preserve this work as a future museum for contemporary art. Several artists had already made works available for the museum—but sadly their efforts were not successful: the building was torn down suddenly. (Sabine Breitwieser)
